Ask Australians what led to the birth of their nation and you will probably hear about the discovery of the East Coast by Captain James Cook in 1770 or the arrival of the First Fleet in 1788.
It wasn’t until 1901, however, that the six British colonies of New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania, Victoria and Western Australia joined together to form the Commonwealth of Australia.
So why did it take so long?
The Federation Story is a free interactive exhibition at Federation Square that traces the events, people and ideas that led to the birth of the Australian nation.
It also explores those things that have continued to shape our country, our culture and our place in the world.
There’s just one thing missing….You.
You don't need to be a history buff, or a professional writer. You don't even need to know who Henry Parkes was!
This is your chance to be part of history and share your personal or family story with the rest of Australia at Federation Square.
What events have been important to you? What makes you proud? Who inspires you?
You can submit text, images, audio and video files.
